The annual Jersey Butterfly Monitoring Scheme (JBMS) event returns in 2024.

Date and Time: Saturday May 18th, 10am - 3pm.

Location: Frances Le Sueur Centre, St Ouen.

The JBMS has been tracking the fortunes of butterflies at sites across the Island for the past 20 years!

Come along to the Frances Le Sueur Centre on Saturday 18th May 2024 to learn more about the scheme and discover how you can help monitor butterflies and other pollinators in Jersey.

JBMS coordinator Denise McGowan will provide a brief overview of the scheme and highlight the great work of the JBMS volunteers. We will also share some tips on how to identify some of the trickier butterfly species found in Jersey.

The training is open to everyone and is free to attend.

Schedule of the day

  • 10am - 11:45 Welcome teas & coffees, introduction, overview of the last 20 years of the JBMS.
  • 11:45 - 12:00 Break.
  • 12:00 - 13:00 Tricky butterfly species identification.
  • 13:00 - 13:45 Sign up and lunch (sandwiches provided).
  • 13:45 - 14:15 Other butterfly survey schemes.
  • 14:15 - 15:15 Practical sessions: Walk a JBMS transect, Garden Butterfly Survey, Flower-Insect Timed Counts (FIT Counts), Butterfly Conservation iRecord Butterflies app, how to input your data online.

Please note that the schedule detailed above is approximate. Depending upon the weather on the day, it may be necessary to adapt the schedule so that the practical sessions can take place in suitable weather.

Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for the practical sessions and please bring a hat, appropriate sun protection, and some drinking water.

If you have a pair of close focusing binoculars, please also bring these along with you.
